Creatura
The Concept
‘Creatura - A World of Festival’ is an outdoor theatre production with four integrated components. It is written, produced and created by Regional West Australian Artists and celebrates true stories of the West Australian Outback
1. The Protagonist - Creatura
A 12-metre, fire-breathing, animatronic dragon puppet. Creatura the Puppet is the Festival Spectacle figurehead and a contemporary icon of the Gascoyne Region. A Dragon has been chosen for its ‘unity of parts’ to be a symbol of solidarity and positive change for the people of the Gascoyne. The puppet is larger than life, audacious and powerful. It will be operated by 3 - 5 actors. The Creatura puppet will be the main feature of the Street Theater Production. It can also be a stand-alone dragon spectacle. It will be bookable for community, festival and corporate events and is intended to travel Australia and globally.
2. The Story - Street Theater Production
Deemed a ‘Broadway of the Salt Bush’, the Creatura Theatre Production aims to be a yearly season which tells true stories of the Gascoyne’s past: Impeccable productions, delivered by remote Australia to the world! The Creatura Production will reimagine outdoor public spaces of the Gascoyne by using them as theatres to present magnificent live collective events which locals are proud of and can aspire to be in via Creality’s Situation Based Training program. Featuring the Creatura Puppet and a regional multicultural cast, the narrative is told from the First Nations’ perspective. Deep time, colonel time and contemporary time are blended in theatrical devices which include an original soundtrack, new circus, dance, digital animation, projection mapping and a live cast of West Australian Regional Artists. This project can be scaled to reflect the resources available upon delivery. It is a production that is engineered to be viably staged, stored and toured.
3. Community Engagement - Festival Machines Program
‘Festival Machines‘ is the name of an annual program that merges arts, science and people. Leading into each Creatura event the Festival Machines program will work with schools, men's groups, individuals and other community organisations, giving locals the opportunity to create miniature kinetic sculptures called ‘festival machines’. At each event these sculptures will populate the stage creating an arts ecosystem in which Creatura resides; co-creating the festival experience: Accessible, Inclusive and Inspiring! The original iteration of Creatura was the outcome of the 2019 Festival Machines program. By showcasing the innovation of the Creatura junkyard-high-tech hybrid we will inspire new creators, and recruit and talent scout new regional talent. The Festival Machines Program aims to engage the disengaged, supporting regional communities to become invested participants in their annual celebrations.
4. Industry Development, Career Pathways & Internships - ‘Situation-Based Training’
Creatura will provide pathways into the arts by supporting individuals to step into the world of puppeteering, sculpting, mechanics, acting, welding, engineering and a multitude of other disciplines. Locals will learn about setting up, operating and performing a large-scale festival spectacle. Once established Creatura will be an annual evolving session of festival shows staged throughout the Gascoyne and a local cast of regionally based people will be trained and employed to puppeteer Creatura, be production crew and featured performers bringing Creatura to life. Two of the three Creatura creators have been trained via Creality’s SBT program and now work seasonally in the Arts and Entertainment Sector. Creality is Building a regional festival industry, but we can’t do it alone…

Street Theater Production
The Story
In 1875 a Chinese boy with a female dragon egg was sent on a ship from China to Western Australia where he worked as a cook on an isolated pastoral station. …
…He loses the egg in the Gascoyne River (Chinaman’s Pool). The river awakens the egg, hatching Creatura, a dragon who, together with the boy, journeys around the Gascoyne to learn its stories. On their journey, the boy and the dragon meet a runaway Japanese girl, an Afghan wool trader, a Jesuit priest architect, a shipwrecked Croatian boy and a magical Aboriginal housemaid. Each encounter reveals historic stories of the Gascoyne's rich multicultural diversity. Each dragon scale reflects another story. A foster child of the Gascoyne River, home of the River Serpents and mother of the region, Creatura illuminates the fantastic multicultural vibrancy of the Gascoyne’s heritage, giving face, voice and identity to ‘other’. The narrative is told from the First Nations of the Gascoyne, a people who have lived on the oldest landmass of the planet for thousands of generations and extended generosity to these audacious outliers. The Creatura production will reimagine outdoor public spaces of the Gascoyne by using them as theatres to present magnificent live collective events which locals are proud of and can aspire to be in via Creality’s Situation Based Training program. This production will create career pathways for Gascoyne people into the festival industry. Deemed a ‘Broadway of the Salt Bush’, the Creatura production aims to be a yearly season that tells true stories of the Gascoyne’s past: Impeccable productions, delivered by remote Australia to the world! Creatura is a 12-metre fire-breathing animatronic puppet with her eyes on the international festival circuit…
